Rock Camp for Girls // Session 2, 2012

It's a beautiful breezy Saturday afternoon in August. Yet, I'm finding myself in a dark club getting assaulted by candy. Seriously. There is candy flying from all directions and every person in the audience is diving for a swedish fish or a lifesaver gummy. This sea of humans consists of people of all ages and backgrounds. They are here to watch one of the best concerts in the world. We don't know any of the 17 bands' songs and we will probably never see these same bands play again. It only took the band members a week to write their songs but they will stay with us for much longer. This is Rock Camp. Specifically, Willie Mae's Rock Camp for Girls based in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In a week, girls ages 8-18 make friends, learn to play an instrument, write a song, design merch and then end the week with rocking out on the big stage. There are rock camps dedicated to girls and women of all ages all over the world. From Sweden to Omaha girls are making their rock n roll dreams come true. These pictures are just a small glimpse into the world of rock camp.History of Women Who Rock - a workshop that covers American women in modern musicSound Makin' and Rule Breakin' - an improv workshoplunchtimeself-defense classgltrpnch (queer-posi pop punk band made up of rock camp volunteers) played lunchtime. they played a blink 182 cover that made everyone shake their booties.women in music panelsnacktime dancepartyThe Power of Community - a workshop on building & protecting communityThe Suzan played lunchtimeThe Showcase
