Ladies Rock Camp 2.0

Ladies Rock Camp

Ladies Rock Camp is a weekend music workshop for people ages 19 and up. And this is how it works. Whether you’ve been playing music your whole life or have never touched a guitar, you will join a band, write a song and play a show. All of this happens in less than 72 hours. It’s so BAD ASS!

Ladies Rock Camp 2.0 is a slightly different take on the workshop because there was actually a pre-requisite. You had to have some music experience or have attended a previous Ladies Rock Camp session. Which allowed for some really interesting additions! There were new classes. Instrument instructors had more time and really pushed themselves and the campers to the next level. In the end, we all got to hear some new great songs.

Petal War and Tamar-kali played really riveting sets. Caryn (Mortals) taught a room of people how to book a show. She shared some advice on how to avoid being in a bummer show situation. Emma Alabaster did an improv class that I missed but had an affect on how campers listened to each other. Melanie McLean shot this really cool mini doc and edited it in time for the showcase.

From 2008: The Slits’ Ari Up // at Lit Lounge

Years ago I got the chance to shoot The Slits. It was a part of a CMJ showcase at Lit Lounge. I was expecting a full punk band. Instead it was frontwoman Ari in one of the most outrageous outfits I’ve ever seen performing one of the most absurdly strange sets I’ve ever seen. She showed up and handed the sound engineer a CD. That was her backing band. The CD was filled with all these futuristic, bizarre beats and it kept skipping. Nonetheless, it was strange, intimate and strong — just the way I like my music.

Only two years after this show, Ari died at age 48.
