Ladies Rock Camp 2012 // at Funkadelic Studios

Ladies Rock Camp is an entirely different beast from Willie Mae’s Rock Camp for Girls. For starters, Ladies Rock Campers only have one weekend (2 and a half days) to form a band, write a song, design a logo and make merch and then play a show. Seriously, they did this all in TWO AND A HALF DAYS!

Rock Camp is a very special place to be. One woman was inspired to join camp because her daughter was in the girls’ session. She said (and I’m super-paraphrasing here), “If my daughter can rock out, why can’t I?” Another woman came from Montreal. She is a classically trained vocalist and it’s been her life dream to be in a rock band. For her, this single weekend in Manhattan was a dream come true. My boyfriend overheard another woman at the showcase enthusiastically telling her friend, “If I could learn that much bass in just 3 days, can you imagine what I could learn in a month?!”

I hope you enjoy the pictures. Funkadelic Studios in midtown graciously made it possible for 51 women to form bands and make music in a professional setting and Kenny’s Castaway’s made it possible for them to show off their skills to all their friends and family.
